Tesla Roadster Seat Belt Extender

Buckle Up Comfortably In Your Tesla Roadster

At 1,127mm tall the Roadster is the lowest car we supply for, and it has just two seats, so there are only two positions to consider. Sitting that close to the floor is what makes the buckle hard to reach, not the belt length.

The Problem

You do not climb into a Roadster so much as lower yourself in past a wide, high sill. Once seated you are barely above the road, hemmed in by that sill on one side and the transmission tunnel on the other, with the buckle stalk sitting somewhere your wrist cannot comfortably bend to reach. Add a jacket, or a roof panel that has to come off first, and a simple task becomes a contortion.

The Solution

A certified extender raises the connection point to where your hand already sits. One click into the car's buckle, one click with the original belt tongue. Nothing is cut, drilled, or modified, which matters a great deal on a car built in such small numbers that original trim is effectively irreplaceable.

Which Roadster Do You Have?

Four specifications ran across a short production life, and the 2.5 brought interior changes worth noting.

Version Years Worth Knowing
Roadster 1.5 And 2.0 2008 to 2010 The earliest cars, all left-hand drive, with the original interior fit-out.
Roadster 2.5 2010 to 2012 Revised interior and suspension, so trim differs from earlier cars. Send a photo if yours is near the change.
Roadster 2.5 Sport 2010 to 2012 A hand-wound motor and 288hp. Mechanically different, with the same cabin as the 2.5.
Final Edition 2012 Just fifteen cars closed out production in January 2012. Contact us rather than ordering blind.

Fewer Than Fifty Right-Hand-Drive Cars Were Built

Around 2,450 Roadsters were sold worldwide, roughly 1,800 of them in the United States and about 575 across the whole of Europe. Right-hand-drive production only began in early 2010, for the United Kingdom and Ireland, and reportedly fewer than fifty such cars were ever made.

That matters when you order. A British car from 2010 onward may be right-hand drive, but plenty of Roadsters here arrived privately from America and are left-hand drive. Tell us the physical side rather than saying driver or passenger, since the driver's seat could be either one on this model.

The Lotus Connection Is Thinner Than It Looks

Roadster gliders were built by Lotus at Hethel in Norfolk, on an Elise-derived chassis, which naturally suggests Elise parts as a shortcut. Be careful with that assumption. Tesla has put the shared parts content at somewhere around six or seven per cent, so the two cars have far less in common than the shared production line implies.

Belt hardware sits firmly in the ninety-plus per cent that differs. An Elise part is worth comparing side by side if you happen to have access to one, but it is not a substitute for confirming against your own buckle. Photograph the latch plate and the slot it enters, and we will match from the car rather than the chassis it started life as.

Choose The Style That Fits How You Sit

Three styles across our full extender range. In a car this low, height almost always beats length.

Style Best For
Rigid A solid section in 3, 5 or 7 inch that stands upright and holds the buckle where you can see it. Usually the right answer here, since sitting barely a metre off the road puts the latch below your natural hand position.
Regular Woven webbing in 18cm or 25cm matching your original belt. The choice if your hand reaches the latch without trouble and only the belt falls short, which is the less common case in this cabin.
Adjustable Woven webbing with a sliding adjuster from 23cm to 66cm. Worth considering for the passenger seat if different people ride with you.

Tesla Roadster Fitment Details

Feature Detail
Model Years 2008 to January 2012, across the 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 2.5 Sport and Final Edition specifications
Body Two-door, two-seat roadster with a removable roof, 3,946mm long and just 1,127mm tall
Seat Positions Two only. No rear seats, no center position, so order by physical side.
Layout Rear mid-mounted motor driving the rear wheels, so a tunnel runs between the seats
Tongue Width Confirmed individually from a photograph of your buckle rather than published as a specification
Material Woven seat belt webbing or rigid metal extension, with a smooth-finish metal latch
Production Volume Around 2,450 worldwide, with roughly 575 sold across Europe and fewer than fifty built right-hand drive
Origin Gliders built by Lotus at Hethel in Norfolk, though only around six or seven per cent of parts are shared with the Elise
Not Covered The second-generation Roadster announced in 2017, which has not reached customer deliveries
Certification E4 or E8 type-approved

How It Works

Nothing is cut, drilled, or modified. The whole thing takes about five seconds and lifts straight back out whenever you want it gone.

1

Click the extender's tongue into your seat belt receptacle.

2

Buckle your seat belt into the extender, then tug it firmly to confirm it holds.

3

To remove it, press the release button just like a normal belt.

Pick The Shortest Length That Works

We recommend adding only the minimum length you need to buckle comfortably. More webbing is not safer, it just adds slack.

1.Pick The Side

Front left or front right. Say which physically, since Roadsters here come both ways round.

2.Test With The Roof Off

If you drive open, judge the reach that way too, since shoulder position changes without the roof.

3.Send A Photo

On a car built in these numbers, a picture of the latch plate is the only reliable fit check.

Who This Product Is For

  • ✦Plus-sized drivers and passengers in a famously tight cockpit
  • ✦Anyone sitting barely a meter off the road with the latch below hand height
  • ✦Owners reaching across a wide sill and a central tunnel at the same time
  • ✦Anyone with shoulder, back, or reach limitations

Good To Know

  • ✦Two seats only, so there is no rear or centre position to order
  • ✦Elise parts are a weaker match than the shared factory suggests
  • ✦Cars here may be left or right-hand drive, so state the physical side

Questions Worth Answering

1Will A Lotus Elise Part Fit My Roadster?+
Less often than owners expect. Lotus built the Roadster gliders at Hethel on an Elise-derived chassis, which makes the connection sound closer than it is, but Tesla has put the shared parts content at around six or seven per cent. Everything else was changed, and belt hardware falls in the part that differs. Comparing an Elise latch plate side by side is worth doing if you have access to one, though it settles nothing on its own. Photograph your own buckle and the tongue beside it, and we will match from the car in front of us.
2Which Side Should I Order, Left Or Right?+
Tell us the physical side rather than saying driver or passenger, because Roadsters in Britain come both ways round. Right-hand-drive production did not begin until early 2010, for the UK and Ireland, and reportedly fewer than fifty such cars were built in total. A great many Roadsters here arrived privately from America instead, where roughly 1,800 of the 2,450 built were sold, and those are left-hand drive. Saying front left or front right removes the ambiguity entirely.
3How Do I Tell Whether I Need Rigid Or Regular?+
Sit in the car dressed as you normally drive and reach for the buckle with your eyes shut. If your hand finds the latch and the belt simply will not stretch to meet it, you need length, so a regular extender in the shortest size that reaches. If your hand meets the sill, the tunnel or the seat side before it gets near the latch, you need height instead, which means rigid. At 1,127mm tall the Roadster is the lowest car we supply for, so the second case is much the commoner one here even for drivers who need no extra length at all.
4Does This Cover The New Roadster?+
No. Everything here applies to the original Roadster built between 2008 and January 2012. Tesla announced a second-generation Roadster in 2017 with a very different specification, including rear seats, but it has not reached customer deliveries, so there is no production hardware to measure against. Should that change we will cover it separately rather than extending this listing, since the two cars would share a name and almost nothing else. Get in touch if you have ordered one and want to be told when parts are confirmed.
5Is It Road Legal Here, And What If It Does Not Fit?+
Our extenders carry E4 or E8 type approval, the European mark showing the part has been tested and approved to the relevant standard, and they are made in a UK-registered factory compliant with ISO/TS 16949:2009 to exceed international break-strength requirements for three-point belts. Read your owner's manual alongside the safety notes supplied before use. Extenders are only for people who cannot otherwise fasten the standard belt, and should never be used with a child seat or child restraint. On an open-topped car, check the webbing for fading or fraying more often than you would on a saloon, since sun and rain reach it directly. If it does not fit, return it within the guarantee window for a refund.
