The Formentor is CUPRA's best-selling car and the first the brand built from scratch. A low coupé roofline, a raised console and firmly bolstered sports seats all conspire to put the buckle somewhere your hand cannot easily reach. The Problem

Up front, the sports seat is the obstacle rather than the belt. A raised side bolster runs from your hip upward, with the console on the other side, and the buckle stalk drops into the slot between them where you cannot see it. In the rear, the coupé roofline lowers the door aperture so passengers duck in and settle lower than they expect, leaving the latch behind the hip rather than beside it. Add a winter coat and either position becomes a daily fumble.

2020 to 2023, or the revised 2024 car?

The Formentor arrived in 2020 and was substantially revised for 2024, inside as well as out. Revisions of that scale are exactly where seat and trim components get quietly updated without ever appearing in a brochure.

So treat the earlier and later cars as two separate vehicles when you order. Select your exact year rather than rounding to the nearest one, and if you are between the two, send a photo of your metal latch plate and the slot it goes into and we will confirm which part you need.

There is no SEAT version of this one

Worth clearing up, because it catches people who know the rest of the range. The Ateca and the Leon both exist as SEATs and as CUPRAs, so owners are used to checking the badge. The Formentor does not. It was the first car CUPRA designed as its own model rather than a hotted-up SEAT, and no SEAT Formentor has ever existed.

So if your car says Formentor, this is the right page regardless of badging. What does still matter is the year and the trim, since VZ cars carry deeper seats than the standard car.

1Will a Volkswagen Golf, Tiguan or SEAT Leon part fit my Formentor?+
Often, and it is a sensible question. The Formentor sits on Volkswagen Group's MQB Evo architecture alongside the Golf, Tiguan, SEAT Leon, Audi A3 and the CUPRA Leon and Terramar, which share its wheelbase. The catch is the usual one: each brand fits its own seats, and the belt tongue belongs to the seat rather than the floorpan, so a shared platform is a good starting point rather than a guarantee. If you have one of those parts to hand, photograph both latch plates side by side and send them over and we will tell you plainly whether they match.
2Is there a SEAT Formentor I should be ordering for instead?+
No, and the Formentor is unusual in the range for that reason. The Ateca and the Leon exist as both SEATs and CUPRAs, so owners get used to checking the boot badge before ordering parts. 4How do I tell whether I need rigid or regular?+
Sit in the seat dressed as you normally drive and reach for the buckle with your eyes shut. If your hand finds the latch and the belt simply will not stretch to meet it, you need length, so choose a regular extender in the shortest size that reaches. If your hand meets the seat bolster or the console before it gets near the latch, you need height instead, and that is a rigid extender whatever your size. A CUPRA sports seat exists to hold you still through a corner, which means a raised side wall, so the front of a Formentor is usually the second case. On a VZ with its deeper seats, almost always.
5My Formentor is a plug-in hybrid. Does that change anything?+
The powertrain makes no difference to the buckle itself, so the e-Hybrid badge is not what we need to know. Battery packaging on a plug-in hybrid can raise the rear cushion slightly compared with a petrol car, which alters the angle of the reach in the back. If you are fitting a rear seat and sit between two lengths, the longer one is usually the safer pick. Front seats are unaffected, since front seat height is set by the seat frame rather than the floor.
6Why do my rear passengers struggle more than I do?+
The coupé roofline is the reason. A sloping roof lowers the rear door aperture, so passengers duck to get in and then settle lower and more reclined than they would in a conventional SUV of the same size. The latch ends up behind the hip rather than beside it, which is a different problem from the bolster blocking your hand up front. Order for each row separately, and check the reach with someone actually sitting in the back rather than leaning in from outside.
7Can I leave it fitted, and can I use one with a child seat?+
You can leave it in the seat you use it in. The car reads a fastened belt exactly as normal, because the extender clicks into the same receptacle, though you should unclip it when the seat is empty so occupancy sensors do not read an occupied but unbelted position. Never use one with a child seat or child restraint, in any position. A child restraint is engineered around the car's own belt path and anchor geometry and an extender changes both, so use the ISOFIX points and top tether anchors fitted to your Formentor instead.
8Is it road legal here, and what if it does not fit?+
