Ferrari 288 Seat Belt Extender

Product description
Shipping & Return
🛡E4 & E8 Certified · Built in a UK Registered Factory

Buckle Up Comfortably in Your Ferrari 288 GTO

Only 272 of these were built, and values rest on originality and documented history. So we are not going to tell you this fits your car from a model name. Send us a photo of your buckle first, and read the note on originality below before you order anything.

The Problem

The 288 GTO stands just 1,120mm tall, which is lower than almost anything else on the road, and you drop down into a cockpit built around a tubular frame rather than around comfort. Sitting low and reclined, with the sill on one side and the transmission tunnel on the other, the buckle ends up somewhere behind your hip that your wrist cannot easily bend to reach. Forty years of use rarely makes a belt mechanism any more willing either.

The Solution

A certified extender lifts the connection point up to where your hand already sits. One click into the car's own receptacle, one click with your original belt tongue. Nothing is cut, drilled, or permanently attached, and the car returns to exactly as it was the moment you unclip it.

💪

Exceeds Break-Strength

Built to surpass international break-strength tests for three-point belts.

Originality first, on a car where it decides value

With 272 cars built, 288 GTO values rest on tiny production and continuous, documented history, and many owners hold or pursue Ferrari Classiche certification. Anything fitted to a car like that deserves thinking about properly rather than ordering on impulse.

An extender is not a modification. Nothing is cut, drilled, or permanently attached, no original component is removed, and it lifts straight out leaving the car exactly as it was. That said, if your car is Classiche certified or you intend to submit it, speak to your Ferrari specialist or the Classiche office before fitting any accessory. We would rather you asked than assumed, and we will happily wait.

Send a Photo before you order

The 288 GTO was built between 1984 and 1987, so even the last cars are approaching forty years old. Belt tongue and receptacle shapes from that period were not standardized the way they are today, and many of these cars have had restoration work, belt replacement or re-webbing during their lives.

We will not claim a fit from the model name on a car of this age and value. Send a clear photo of your metal latch plate and the slot it goes into, along with the chassis year, and we will tell you honestly whether we have a match. If we do not, we will say so plainly.

Choose Style That Fits

Three styles across our full extender range. In a car this low the answer is almost always height rather than length.

Style Best for
Rigid A solid section in 3, 5 or 7 inch that stands upright and holds the buckle where you can see it. Usually the right answer here, because the obstacle is the low seating position and the tunnel rather than belt length. Start at 3 inch, the shortest we make.
Regular Woven webbing in 7 inch or 10 inch matching your original belt. The choice if you can find the latch by feel without trouble and only the length falls short.
Adjustable Woven webbing with a sliding adjuster covering 9 to 26 inches. Worth considering for the passenger seat if you carry different people.

Related models Developed from the Ferrari 308 GTB, and the direct predecessor of the F40

How it works

Nothing is cut, drilled, or modified. The whole thing takes about five seconds and lifts straight back out whenever you want it gone.

1

Click the extender's tongue into your seat belt receptacle.

2

Buckle your seat belt into the extender. Takes about five seconds, no tools needed.

3

To remove it, press the release button just like a normal belt.

Pick the shortest length that works

We recommend adding only the minimum length you need to buckle comfortably. More webbing is not safer, it just adds slack.

1.Photograph the buckle

One clear shot of the metal latch plate and the slot it enters. On this car that comes before choosing anything.

2.Measure to the tunnel top

The useful measure is the height needed to bring the buckle into view, not the reach across your lap.

3.Pick the physical side

Front left or front right. Say the side rather than driver or passenger, since these cars are left-hand drive.

Made for

  • Plus-sized drivers and passengers
  • Taller drivers sitting very low in a tight cockpit
  • Owners who want a reversible solution rather than any change to the car
  • Anyone with shoulder, back, or reach limitations

Good to know

  • Fitment on this car is confirmed from a photo, never from the model name
  • Two seats only, so there is no rear position on any 288 GTO
  • Classiche owners should speak to their specialist before fitting any accessory

Satisfaction Guarantee

If it is not right for your car, return it within the guarantee window for a refund.

Certified Quality

E4/E8 approved and built in a registered facility to exceed break-strength tests.

Questions worth answering

1Will fitting one affect originality or Ferrari Classiche certification?+
An extender is not a modification in any physical sense. Nothing is cut, drilled or permanently attached, no original component is removed or altered, and the car returns to exactly as it was the moment you unclip it. That is genuinely different from replacing a belt or changing an anchor point. Even so, on a car where values rest on documented history and many owners hold or pursue Classiche certification, we would rather you checked than took our word for it. Speak to your Ferrari specialist or the Classiche office before fitting any accessory, and order afterwards. We are not going to push you on this.
2Why will you not just confirm it fits a 288 GTO?+
Because the model name is not enough information on a car like this, and we would rather say so than guess. Only 272 were built between 1984 and 1987, belt tongue shapes from that period were not standardised, and after forty years a good proportion of these cars have had restoration work, belt replacement or rewebbing at some point. Two cars with consecutive chassis numbers could differ. One clear photo of your latch plate and the slot it enters takes a minute and settles it properly. If we do not have a match, we will tell you plainly rather than sell you something hopeful.
3Would a Ferrari 308 or 328 part fit?+
Possibly, and it is the sensible place to start looking. The 288 GTO was developed from the 308 GTB, and Ferrari took that route deliberately so it could extend the existing homologation rather than type-approve an all-new car. A great deal was shared as a result. The caution is that the GTO uses a tubular frame with composite panels and a purpose-built interior rather than a production 308 shell, so the overlap is far from complete. If you have a 308 or 328 part to hand, photograph both latch plates side by side and send them over and we will compare them properly.
4My car is badged GTO. Which one do I have?+
Ferrari has used the GTO name three times, and they are not interchangeable. The 250 GTO came in 1962, the 288 GTO between 1984 and 1987, and the 599 GTO in 2011. Nothing on this page applies to the other two. If your car is a 250 GTO, belt hardware from that era needs assessing individually and we would want photographs before discussing anything. A 599 GTO is a modern car and takes a completely different part, so get in touch and we will point you at the right listing.
5How do I work out whether I need rigid or regular?+
Sit in the seat dressed as you normally drive and reach for the buckle with your eyes shut. If your hand finds the latch and the belt simply will not stretch to meet it, you need length, so a regular extender in the shortest size that reaches. If your hand stops against the tunnel or the seat side before it gets near the latch, you need height instead, and that is a rigid extender whatever your size. At 1,120mm tall the GTO is usually the second case, because sitting that low puts the buckle somewhere your wrist cannot bend to reach. A longer strap there simply coils into the same gap.
6My car has a competition harness fitted. Can I still use one?+
No. Extenders work with a factory three-point belt, and a multi-point harness has nothing for one to attach to. Some 288 GTOs have had harnesses fitted over the years for track use, and a few have also gained roll cages or fire systems. If your car is set up that way, an extender has no role to play and you should not fit one. If the original three-point belts are still in place alongside a harness, tell us which you actually use and we will advise accordingly.
7Will it mark the interior, and how should I care for it?+
The latch plate has a smooth finish rather than a machined edge, which matters on an interior you cannot simply reorder. The thing to watch is an unbuckled extender left hanging against the tunnel trim or the seat side, since any hard part allowed to rub will eventually mark it. Clip it in properly rather than letting it hang, and check the contact point after the first few outings. For care, wipe the webbing with a damp cloth and mild soap and keep solvents, bleach and leather conditioner away from it. Replace it if you find fraying or a stiff latch, and after any incident.
8Is it road legal here, and what if it does not fit?+
Our extenders carry E4 or E8 type approval, the European mark showing the part has been tested and approved to the relevant standard, and they are made in a UK-registered factory compliant with ISO/TS 16949:2009 to exceed international break-strength requirements for three-point belts. Read your owner's handbook alongside the safety notes supplied before use, and note that extenders are only for people who cannot otherwise fasten the standard belt. If it does not fit, return it within the guarantee window for a refund, but on a car of this rarity we would much rather confirm from your photograph first and send the right part than process a return.
