Ferrari California Seat Belt Extender

Buckle Up Comfortably in Your Ferrari California

Before anything else, count the seats behind you. Ferrari sold the California two ways, with small rear seats or with no rear seats at all, so two cars of the same year can have four belt positions or two. Check yours, then read on.

The Problem

The California puts its V8 behind the front axle and drives through a rear transaxle, which runs a tunnel down the center of the cabin. Up front the buckle drops into the slot between that tunnel and a figure-hugging sports seat, so you reach into a gap you cannot see. Where rear seats are fitted, they are tight enough that a passenger settles low with the latch behind the hip. A jacket makes either position worse.

The Solution

A certified extender lifts the connection point up clear of the tunnel to where your hand already sits. One click into the car's own receptacle, one click with your factory belt tongue. Nothing is cut, drilled, or permanently attached, and it lifts straight back out.

Exceeds Break-Strength

Built to surpass international break-strength tests for three-point belts.

Which configuration is yours?

Ferrari offered two rear layouts throughout the California's life, and the difference is total rather than a matter of degree.

Configuration What is behind the front seats Belt positions
2+2 Two small individual rear seats with their own belts, plus ISOFIX mounting points. Four: front left, front right, rear left, rear right
2+ No rear seats at all. A leather-trimmed luggage bench with tie-down straps replaces them. Two: front left and front right only

One thing we will not sell you, and this car is the reason to say it clearly

California 2+2 cars have ISOFIX mounting points in the rear, yet the seats themselves are tight enough that owners and reviewers alike describe fitting a child seat as a struggle. Putting those two facts together, the temptation to reach for an extender to make a child seat work is obvious.

Do not. An extender must never be used with a child seat or child restraint, in any position or any car. A restraint is engineered around the vehicle's own belt path and anchor geometry, and an extender changes both while introducing slack. If a child seat will not install cleanly in the rear of your California, the answer is a different seat, a different position, or another car for that journey. Never an extender.

California or California T?

Two distinct cars wore the name. The original ran from 2008 to 2014 with a naturally aspirated 4.3-litre V8. The California T arrived for 2014 with a 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8, bringing turbocharging back to a Ferrari road car after more than two decades, along with a restyled body and a revised cabin.

Interior revisions of that scale are where seat and trim components get changed without appearing in a brochure, so treat the two as separate cars when you order. Select your exact year rather than rounding to the nearest one.

Choose Style That Fits

Three styles across our full extender range. In a front-mid-engine car with a tunnel the answer is usually height rather than length.

Style Best for
Rigid A solid section in 3, 5 or 7 inch that stands upright and holds the buckle where you can see it. Usually the right answer up front, where the transaxle tunnel and the sports seat close off the space between them.
Regular Woven webbing in 7 inch or 10 inch matching your factory belt. The choice when you can find the latch by feel and only the length falls short.
Adjustable Woven webbing with a sliding adjuster covering 9 to 26 inches. Worth considering for the passenger seat if you carry different people.

Ferrari California Fitment Details

Feature Detail
Model years 2008 to 2017, built at Maranello. California to 2014, California T from 2014.
Body Two-door retractable hardtop convertible, around 4,570mm long and 1,322mm tall with the roof up
Seat positions Front left and front right, plus rear left and rear right on 2+2 cars only. No centre rear position.
Configuration note 2+ cars have no rear seats and no rear belts, so there is nothing to extend behind the front row
Material Woven seat belt webbing or rigid metal extension, with a smooth-finish metal latch
Roof note The two-piece hardtop folds into the boot in around fourteen seconds, so boot space is shared with the roof
Related models Ferrari's first front-mid-engined V8, replaced by the Portofino which kept the same basic layout

Certification E4 or E8 type-approved

How it works

Nothing is cut, drilled, or modified. The whole thing takes about five seconds and lifts straight back out whenever you want it gone.

1

Click the extender's tongue into your seat belt receptacle.

2

Buckle your seat belt into the extender. Takes about five seconds, no tools needed.

3

To remove it, press the release button just like a normal belt.

Pick shortest length that works

We recommend adding only the minimum length you need to buckle comfortably. More webbing is not safer, it just adds slack.

1.Count the rear seats

Two small seats means a 2+2 with four positions. A luggage bench means a 2+ with two.

2.Reach with your eyes shut

If you find the latch by feel you need length. If your hand stops at the tunnel or seat side, you need height.

3.Pick the physical side

UK cars are right-hand drive, so the driver's seat is the front right. Say the side rather than the role.

Made for

  • Plus-sized drivers and passengers
  • Anyone reaching past a transaxle tunnel and a figure-hugging sports seat
  • Adults using the rear seats of a 2+2 on shorter journeys
  • Anyone with shoulder, back, or reach limitations

Good to know

  • 2+ cars have no rear seats, so count them before selecting a position
  • Never use an extender with a child seat, despite the rear ISOFIX mounts
  • The folding roof shares the boot, so store spares with that in mind

Satisfaction Guarantee

Try it in your California. If it is not right for you, return it within the guarantee window.

Frequently Asked Question

1Can I use one with a child seat in the rear?+
No, and the California is exactly the car where that needs saying plainly. 2+2 cars have ISOFIX mounting points in the rear, but the seats are tight enough that owners and reviewers consistently describe installing a child seat as a struggle. The combination of an anchor point and a seat that barely accepts a restraint makes an extender look like a solution, and it is not one. A child restraint is engineered around the vehicle's own belt path and anchor geometry, and an extender changes both while adding slack. If a seat will not install cleanly, use a different seat, a different position, or a different car for that journey.
2My California has no rear seats. Is that normal?+
Entirely normal, and it is the thing to establish before you order. Ferrari offered the California two ways. The 2+2 has two small individual rear seats with their own belts. The 2+ configuration deletes them altogether and fits a leather-trimmed luggage bench with tie-down straps instead. On a 2+ car there are no rear belts at all, so nothing to extend behind the front row, and any listing offering you a rear position for one is wrong. Two Californias of the same year genuinely differ on this, so count rather than assume.
3Mine is a California T. Is it the same as the earlier car?+
Treat them as separate cars when ordering. The original California ran from 2008 to 2014 with a naturally aspirated 4.3-litre V8. The California T arrived for 2014 with a 3.9-litre twin-turbo, bringing turbocharging back to Ferrari road cars after more than twenty years, and came with a restyled body and a reworked cabin. Interior revisions of that scale are where seat and belt components change quietly. Select your exact year rather than rounding, and send a photo of your latch plate if you are between the two.
4Where should I keep a spare with the roof down?+
Not on the rear seat or bench. The two-piece hardtop folds into the boot in around fourteen seconds, so with the roof down that space is shared with the roof itself and boot capacity drops accordingly. More importantly, anything left loose on the rear seat of an open car can be pulled out into the slipstream, and a metal extender is the last thing you want going anywhere. An extender clipped into a buckle is completely fine with the roof up or down, since it sits at your hip well clear of the roof line. Keep spares out of the car.
5How do I work out whether I need rigid or regular?+
Sit in the seat dressed as you normally travel and reach for the buckle with your eyes shut. If your hand finds the latch and the belt simply will not stretch to meet it, you need length, so a regular extender in the shortest size that reaches. If your hand stops against the tunnel or the seat side before it gets near the latch, you need height instead, and that is a rigid extender whatever your size. The California places its V8 behind the front axle and drives through a rear transaxle, so a tunnel runs between the front seats and most owners find the front is the second case.
6Will a Portofino or 458 part fit my California?+
The Portofino is the closer relative, since it replaced the California T and kept the same basic formula of a front-mid twin-turbo V8 with a folding hardtop. The 458 is a different proposition entirely, a mid-engined two-seater with its own interior architecture. In both cases each generation brought a new cabin, and the belt tongue belongs to the seat rather than the chassis, so a shared layout is a starting point rather than a guarantee. If you have a part from either, photograph both latch plates side by side and send them over and we will compare them properly.
7Will it mark the interior or affect the car's value?+
Nothing is cut, drilled or permanently attached, no original component is removed, and the car returns to exactly as it was the moment you unclip it, so there is nothing for a future buyer or an inspection to find. The latch plate has a smooth finish rather than a machined edge, which matters against semi-aniline leather you cannot simply reorder. The one thing to watch is an unbuckled extender left hanging against the tunnel trim or a seat side, since any hard part allowed to rub will eventually mark it. Clip it in properly and check the contact point after the first few outings.
8Is it road legal here, and what if it does not fit?+
Our extenders carry E4 or E8 type approval, the European mark showing the part has been tested and approved to the relevant standard, and they are made in a UK-registered factory compliant with ISO/TS 16949:2009 to exceed international break-strength requirements for three-point belts. Read your owner's handbook alongside the safety notes supplied before use, and note that extenders are only for people who cannot otherwise fasten the standard belt, never for use with a child restraint. Care is simple: wipe the webbing with a damp cloth and mild soap, avoid solvents and leather conditioner, and replace it if you find fraying, a stiff latch, or after any incident. If it does not fit, return it within the guarantee window for a refund, though sending a photo of your buckle first usually gets the right part to you faster.
