The Problem

Ride height does not help you fasten a belt. The GV70 is built on a rear-drive platform, so a transmission tunnel runs through the cabin and the console sits high alongside the front seat, dropping the buckle stalk into a slot you cannot see into. The 2024 update changed the center console

Most mid-life facelifts change lights and bumpers, and we usually tell customers to treat earlier and later cars separately as a precaution. On the GV70 there is a specific reason. When Genesis revealed the updated car in April 2024, the changes ran to the climate controls and the center console alongside the redesigned lamps, grille and wheels, with the twin screens replaced by a single wide display.

A reworked console matters here because the console is exactly what stands between your hand and the front buckle stalk. Tell us whether your car is before or after that update, and if you are unsure, send a photo taken from the driver's seat looking down at the gap between the seat and the console.

Korean-built or American-built?

Unusually for a Genesis, the GV70 has been built in two places: Ulsan in South Korea, and Montgomery, Alabama, where North American cars were assembled including the first US-built Electrified version. Genesis has said all production returns to South Korea from the 2027 model year.

Cars sold new in Britain come from Korea, so most owners here need not worry. If yours arrived as a private import from North America, mention it, because a different plant and supply chain is a reasonable place for interior fittings to differ.

1Does the 2024 update change the part I need?+
It can, and this car is a genuine exception to the usual rule. We normally tell customers to treat pre and post-facelift cars separately as a precaution, because interior parts sometimes change quietly. On the GV70 the changes were stated: when Genesis revealed the updated car in April 2024 they listed the climate controls and the centre console alongside the new lamps, grille and wheels. 2Mine is the Electrified GV70. How does it differ from a GV60?+
In a way that matters for the rear seat. The GV60 was designed from the start as an electric car on a dedicated platform, which gives it a flat floor. The Electrified GV70 takes a combustion platform and fits a battery to it, so the floor rises more and the rear cushion sits higher as a result. Passengers end up knees-up with the latch further below them. Front seats are largely unaffected, since front seat height comes from the seat frame rather than the floor. Mention the Electrified version when ordering a rear seat, and if you are between two lengths, take the longer one.
3Will a G80 or GV80 part fit my GV70?+
Reasonable places to start, and closer than most cross-model questions. The GV70 uses Hyundai's M3 rear-drive platform, first seen on the GV80, and shares its powertrain line-up with the G80, so the three are genuinely related. The catch is that a compact SUV, a mid-size SUV and a saloon all have their own seats and seat mountings, and the belt tongue belongs to the seat rather than the floorpan. If you have a part from either in hand, photograph both latch plates side by side and send them over and we will compare them properly.
4My car is an American import. Does that matter?+
Worth mentioning. The GV70 is unusual among Genesis models in having been built in two places, at Ulsan in South Korea and at Montgomery, Alabama for the North American market, where the first US-built Electrified version was also assembled. Cars sold new in Britain come from Korea, so most owners here need not think about it. A different plant with a different local supply chain is a fair reason to confirm rather than assume though, so if yours came privately from North America, send a photo of the latch plate along with the year.
5I sit high in an SUV. Should buckling up not be easier?+
Ride height helps you get in and out, not fasten the belt. What matters is the relationship between your hip and the buckle stalk, and the GV70 is built on a rear-drive platform with a transmission tunnel and a console sitting high alongside the seat. The stalk drops into the slot between them. Plenty of customers find this car harder to buckle than the saloon they traded in, which surprises them. Judge it by reaching for the latch rather than by how high you are sitting.
6Does an extender affect range, charging or the battery?+
No. An extender is a passive mechanical part with no electronics and no connection to any vehicle system. It weighs a matter of grams and touches nothing beyond the belt itself, so range, charging speed and battery health are all unaffected on an Electrified GV70. Belt warning chimes, pretensioners and occupancy sensors work exactly as they do in the petrol and diesel cars, because the extender clicks into the same receptacle the belt would.
7Can I leave it fitted, and can I use one with a child seat?+
You can leave it in the seat you use it in. The car reads a fastened belt exactly as normal, because the extender clicks into the same receptacle, though you should unclip it when the seat is empty so occupancy sensors do not read an occupied but unbelted position. Never use one with a child seat or child restraint, in any position. A child restraint is engineered around the car's own belt path and anchor geometry and an extender changes both, so use the ISOFIX points and top tether anchors fitted to your GV70 instead.
8Is it road legal here, and what if it does not fit?+
