Hyundai Elantra Seat Belt Extender

Buckle Up Comfortably In Your Hyundai Elantra

If your car was bought new in Britain before 2001, the badge says Lantra rather than Elantra. Thirty-five years and eight generations sit behind this nameplate, so establish which one you have before choosing a length.

The Problem

A compact saloon puts the front buckle stalk in the narrow slot between the console and the seat, where your hand goes in blind. In the rear the latch sits low against the cushion and passengers reach behind the hip for it. On the older generations, some of which are now more than thirty years old, a stiffening retractor turns an awkward reach into a genuine struggle. A winter coat makes any of it worse.

The Solution

A certified extender brings the connection point back to where your hand already falls. One click into the car's buckle, one click with your original belt tongue, and you are secured comfortably. Nothing is cut, drilled, or modified, and it lifts straight back out.

Which Name Is On Your Car?

Hyundai has used four different names for this saloon, and one closely related badge belongs to a different vehicle altogether.

Name Where And When Covered Here
Hyundai Lantra Britain, Europe and Australia, 1990 to 2000 Yes, and the name most older UK cars carry
Hyundai Elantra Standardised worldwide from 2001 onward Yes
Hyundai Avante South Korea and Singapore Yes, same car
Hyundai i30 Sedan Australia, for the current generation Yes, same car
Elantra GT Or Elantra Touring North America, 2008 to 2020 No. A rebadged i30. Contact us.

Why British Cars Said Lantra

Hyundai dropped the E for the British and European markets because Lotus argued that Elantra sat too close to its Elan, with Kia raising a similar objection. Australia had its own complication with a Mitsubishi trim name. So for the first two generations, from 1990 to 2000, this car was the Lantra here and the Elantra almost everywhere else.

Once those conflicts lapsed, Hyundai standardised on Elantra worldwide in 2001. Korea kept Avante instead, because Audi holds the Avant name in Europe. Tell us the badge and the year and we will work from the vehicle rather than the nameplate.

Eight Generations Since 1990

The J1 arrived in 1990, followed by the second Lantra in 1995, then the XD in 2000, the HD in 2006, the MD in 2010, the AD in 2015, the CN7 in 2020 and a further generation for 2026. Alongside those, estate versions were sold as the Lantra Sportswagon and the Avante Touring.

Thirty-five years is the longest run of any car we cover, and the oldest and newest share a name and almost nothing else. Select your exact year rather than rounding, and if your car is from the Lantra era, send a photo of your latch plate as well.

Choose The Style That Fits Where You Sit

Three styles across our full extender range. In a compact saloon the problem is usually reach rather than height.

Style Best For
Regular Woven webbing in 7 inch or 10 inch matching your original belt. The usual answer front and rear, since these seats are modestly shaped and the issue is reach.
Rigid A solid section in 3, 5 or 7 inch that stands upright and holds the buckle visible above the cushion. Worth it if your hand meets the console or seat before it finds the latch, or in heavy clothing.
Adjustable Woven webbing with a sliding adjuster covering 9 to 26 inches. Sensible where the same seat carries different people on different days.

How It Works

Nothing is cut, drilled, or modified. The whole thing takes about five seconds and lifts straight back out whenever you want it gone.

1

Click the extender's tongue into your seat belt receptacle.

2

Buckle your seat belt into the extender. Takes about five seconds, no tools needed.

3

To remove it, press the release button just like a normal belt.

Pick The Shortest Length That Works

We recommend adding only the minimum length you need to buckle comfortably. More webbing is not safer, it just adds slack.

1.Confirm Badge And Year

Lantra, Elantra, Avante or i30 Sedan, plus the exact year. Both narrow the part considerably.

2.Check The Belt First

On an older generation, make sure a tired retractor is not the real problem before you buy.

3.Need Help?

Send your year, badge and seat position, plus a photo of the buckle, and we will confirm the fit.

Questions Worth Answering

1My Car Says Lantra. Is This The Right Page?+
Yes, and if you bought yours new in Britain before 2001 that is exactly what it will say. Hyundai dropped the E for this market because Lotus argued the name sat too close to its Elan, with Kia objecting on similar grounds, so the first two generations were sold here as the Lantra from 1990 to 2000. Once those conflicts lapsed the name was standardised as Elantra worldwide in 2001. Korea uses Avante instead, since Audi holds the Avant name in Europe. Tell us the badge and the year and we will match from the car itself.
2Is An Elantra GT The Same Car?+
No, and it catches people out regularly. In North America, Hyundai sold the i30 estate as the Elantra Touring from 2008 and then the i30 hatchback as the Elantra GT from 2012 until 2020. Both wore Elantra badges but were rebadged i30 models with a wider, taller body and a longer wheelbase than the Elantra saloon. Different car, different parts. If yours is a GT or a Touring, get in touch rather than ordering from this page and we will point you at the right listing.
3Which Generation Is Mine, And Does It Matter?+
It matters more here than on almost any car we cover. Eight generations have carried this nameplate since 1990, which is the longest continuous run of anything in our range, and the first car is now thirty-five years old. A 1992 Lantra and a current Elantra share a badge and essentially nothing else, including their belt hardware. Estate versions were also sold, as the Lantra Sportswagon and the Avante Touring, and those differ from the saloon in the rear. Select your exact year and body, and send a photo of the latch plate if your car is from the Lantra era.
4How Do I Tell Whether I Need Rigid Or Regular?+
Sit in the seat dressed as you normally drive and reach for the buckle with your eyes shut. If your hand finds the latch and the belt simply will not stretch to meet it, you need length, so choose a regular extender in the shortest size that reaches. If your hand meets the console or the seat side before it gets near the latch, you need height instead, and that is a rigid extender whatever your size. The Elantra has modestly shaped seats and no substantial tunnel, so most owners need length. Do the test in a winter coat if that is how you usually travel, since it changes the answer.
5Is It Road Legal Here, And What If It Does Not Fit?+
Our extenders carry E4 or E8 type approval, the European mark showing the part has been tested and approved to the relevant standard, and they are made in a UK-registered factory compliant with ISO/TS 16949:2009 to exceed international break-strength requirements for three-point belts. Read your owner's handbook alongside the safety notes supplied before use. Extenders are only for people who cannot otherwise fasten the standard belt, and should never be used with a child seat or child restraint. Care is simple: wipe the webbing with a damp cloth and mild soap, avoid solvents and bleach, and replace it if you find fraying, a stiff latch, or after any collision. If it does not fit, return it within the guarantee window for a refund.
